Kolkata: Abdul Mannan was newly selected as the opposition leader of West Bengal assembly and he also selected for the Congress legislature party leader on Monday on ballot. In the west Bengal election congress got 44 seats in Bengal poll. Abdul Mannan got the majority ballot vote. Congress observer CP Josi and Ambika Soni also presented in this occasion.
Earlier, Differences have started surfacing in the West Bengal Pradesh Congress over the post of leader of the legislature party. The two prominent names doing the rounds are senior party leaders Manas Ranjan Bhunia and Abdul Mannan. While Mr. Bhunia has won the Sabang seat in Paschim Medinipur for the sixth time, Mr. Mannan bagged the Champdani seat in Hooghly district, returning to the Assembly for the fifth time.
The State Congress is expected to take a call on the matter at a meeting on Tuesday. Having won 44 seats, the Congress is all set to earn the status of Opposition party after a gap of 15 years.
However, regardless of their seniority, it is unlikely that the selection of any of the two as the leader of Legislative Party will be smooth. The main issue is that both of them are not on “good terms” with State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
Friction between the State Congress president and Mr. Mannan came to the fore during the selection of party’s candidate for the Hooghly constituency in the last Lok Sabha polls. Mr. Mannan then threatened to quit active politics, alleging that the State Congress leadership “ignored” his suggestion for the party candidate from the seat.
As for Mr. Bhunia, he is reportedly not in the good books of the State president due to his initial flip-flop in relation to the Left-Congress tie-up.
