Update:The investigation has concluded. Police had ruled out any terrorist angle and said “nothing suspicious” was found from the car after it was opened by police.
The car is registered in the name of Ghulam Mustaba of Samba district in Jammu and Kashmir, who is reportedly a notorious smuggler. The vehicle might have been used for smuggling purposes.
Chandigarh: An alert has been sounded in the border district of Pathankot after an abandoned car was found at Farfal village near here, with the occupants escaping after being chased by villagers, police said on Thursday.
The car with a Jammu and Kashmir registration number was noticed by villagers on Wednesday night following which they gave it a chase.
The occupants of the car then locked the vehicle and ran away, Senior Superintendent of Police Pathankot Rakesh Kaushal said. Police have launched a hunt for the occupants.
“Once the car is unlocked, we will be able to find details about its occupants,” he said.
Heavily armed terrorists had sneaked into Pathankot in January 2016 to attack the IAF base.
