Panaji: Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said out of 204 sanctioned Coastal Police Stations, 170 CPSs were operationalised at present and 34 more will be operationalized by the end of March 2016.
Speaking to reporters after chairing the meeting of Consultative Committee of Ministry of Home Affairs, Singh said the coastal security exercises were conducted by the Coast Guard involving all the stakeholders in all the nine coastal states and four Union Territories biannually.
He also said the Indian Coast Guard was conducting coastal security operations involving all the stakeholders on the basis of intelligence inputs and a total 166 coastal operations had been conducted so far.
As a part of strengthening Coast Guard, two new regional headquarters had been established at Gandhinagar and Kolkata besides three new district headquarters at Port Blair, Puducherry andKavaratti, he said and pointed Indian Navy had been designated as the authority responsible for overall maritime security which includes coastal and offshore security.
The Director General of Coast Guard had been designated as Commander Coastal command and was responsible for overall coordination between central and state agencies in all matters relating to coastal security, he added.
The Union Home Minister said the Coast Guard had been nominated to function as lead intelligence agency for the coast to provide functional arrangements for coordination and sharing of intelligence among various agencies operating on the coast.
He said for a better coordination between Centre and state agencies for coastal security, the national committee on strengthening maritime and coastal security would review timely implementation of various proposals and other important matters pertaining to maritime and coastal security.
Singh said there was a need for effective coordination amongst various central ministries and agencies and the coastal state governments and Union Territories.
Seven coastal states and Union Territories including Goa, West Bengal, Lakshadweep, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Pududherry and Andaman & Nicobar Islands had completed the process and issued requisite notifications and the others are in various stages of implementation.
