33 Indian fishermen arrested for encroaching Lankan waters


Sri Lankan Navy arrests 86 Indian fishermen

Colombo: 33 Indian Fishermen were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy for entering into their waters. According to Indian Fishermen’s Association, on Friday, in the middle of the night, the group of 33 Indian Fishermen entered the Sri Lankan waters in the Nidanthivu area.

All of them are the residents of Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. The Sri Lankan Navy also detained detained five boats along with the fishermen.

Last Friday, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena had cleared the stand of his government on the fishermen issue. He had said that everything will be done considering the law related to the maritime boundary.

He also added, “the Sri Lankan Navy has been asked to arrest any foreign boat or trawler, if it enters the Sri Lankan waters illegally. The law will be the same for everybody.” He said that the same will be applicable for the Indian Navy.
