Ajmer: In a barbaric act at least 24 peacocks have allegedly been brutally poisoned to death in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district. The forest department is on alert after the birds, along with 40 other endangered birds, were found dead in Kanpura Jataan village. The carcass have been sent for post-mortem examination.
A Rajasthan Patrika report said that some unidentified people mixed poison in the jowar (maize) feed for the birds. An investigation has also been ordered into the brutal killing. According to the officials, the real cause of the death can only be ascertained after the post-mortem.
According to the Wildlife Act, hunting the national bird comes under the category of murder. The peacock is protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
