214 Tortoises Seized In Kolkata, 2 Smugglers Held

Kolkata: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Saturday seized over 200 Star tortoises from a hotel in Kolkata and arrested two smugglers in the case.

The tortoises, a rare and endangered species often poached from the wild, were kept in a room in a hotel on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road in Kolkata. The officers of the DRI mounted a surveillance on the hotel and seized the tortoises.

Even as the DRI sleuths kept vigil, a person came to the hotel carrying a backpack and a suitcase and entered the room already occupied by another person.

According to a DRI statement, officers then entered the room and found the tortoises kept in two bags. A total of 214 Indian star tortoises were found.
