Jalpaiguri: Two Trinamool leaders were caught by locals as they tried to take away a mentally challenged woman on a motorcycle on Tuesday.
Mano Roy and Sundar Roy were later arrested and are being quizzed about their motive. Residents said the woman often roams the Bahadur area on the outskirts of Jalpaiguri, the place from where the Roys picked her up on Tuesday night. “The duo were dragging her and trying to put her on a motorcycle. She was resisting them,” said a resident.
Sundar is secretary of a Trinamool booth committee who also works as an electrician and a supervisor in 100-day rural job scheme, said a source. The woman has been admitted at Jalpaiguri district hospital.
“We are interrogating the two men. Once the victim recovers, we will conduct an identification parade,” said inspector-in-charge Biswaroy Sarkar.
Recently, a mentally challenged tribal woman was raped and dumped in South Dinajpur’s Kushmundi. The victim is under treatment at a Malda hospital. The incident had earned the police a rap from chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who had expressed anguish and asked the force to be more vigilant.
