Kolkata: The State Government has decided to run special trams for tourists from December. Being a heritage mode of transport (introduced by the erstwhile British rulers in 1873), trams are popular especially among foreign tourists.
These trams are going to be jointly run by the Transport and Tourism Departments. One of the routes decided would cover the points of Victoria Memorial, Race Course and Shahid Minar, all holders of a rich historical legacy.
This tram would run from Esplanade to Khidderpore, and would see service from December 15, in time for the holiday season. The trams would have luxurious seating, and would have curtained windows. Snacks would be served inside. Five such trams, which would be non-AC, would be run initially.
