10 Hours Ordeal Over At NH34, Protest Withdrawn


Update: The locals and students finally withdraws their protest.

Update:  The protest seems to intensify. Almost 10 hours have elased , but the protest continues. Several other trains, Darjeeling mail , Soraigaht, Teesta, Krishnaganj, kamrup, Aluayabari are stranded at different stations.

Raiganj: Chaos spread initially at the National Highway 34 at Dalkhola and then at the Railway Station over the death of a school student after being hit by a truck, as locals staged protest at these two places on Tuesday.

Several trains, as the result of the protest, are stuck at several stations reportedly. Rajdhani Express, Mahananda Express, Kanchenjunga Express, Capital Express and two others are stranded in Suryakamal, Ajamnagar, Kanki and Barsai stations respectively.

School students of the Darkhola Girls’ School and locals staged a protest at the highway since Tuesday morning over several issue. Their demands include road renovation, proper traffic control and the death of the student on Sunday. The protest still continues which has resulted in massive traffic at the highway.

On Sunday, Najima Begum, a class 9 student of Dalkhola Girls’ High School, was hit by a truck at the highway which resulted in her death. The protesters are also demanding compensation to the Najima’s family. The students have held the authorities, under whom the highway is under control, for Najima’s death.

The locals and students moved their protest to the Dalkhola Rail Gate as they did not get any response from the administration. They have refused to withdraw their protest until and unless the proper authorities provide compensation to the dead girls’ family and provide proper response to their other demands.
