Jammu: Ten labourers have reportedly been by suffocation in an overnight fire in Ramban district, about 120-km from Jammu, police said on Friday.
The fire broke out in Chanderkote camp where construction workers were staying . According to reports they were engaged by a company constructing Chenani-Nashari tunnel on Jammu-Srinagar highway.
Reports said, last night they were burning woods in their shed at Dalwas area. They reportedly died due to asphyxiation and burn injuries, senior superintendent of police Randip Kumar told IANS.
Others were shifted to local hospital.
“We have identified five bodies so far. The dead includes earth mover operators, helpers and labourers from Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and different places of Jammu and Kashmir,” Kumar said.
“The exact cause of fire is being ascertained. I reached the spot immediately after receiving reports about the incident and the fire was brought under control,” he added.
