1 Dead, 2 Injured As Suspected Militants Attack Cash Van

Guwahati: One person has been killed while two others have been injured when unidentified gunmen opened fire on van carrying cash in Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The van was reportedly carrying cash for tea garden employees in Pengree area of the district. While the vehicle was passing through a reserve forest in the area, unidentified gunmen began firing indiscriminately on the van.

The deceased has been identified as Abhijit Paul, a local living in the area. The two others who have been grievously injured have been admitted in the Assam Medical College hospital in Dibrugarh.  The two injured are guards from the Assam Tea Plantation Security Force.

Senior district police officials have reached the spot and are investigating the matter. Police suspect it is the handiwork of ULFA (Independent), the breakaway anti-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Assam.
